Morpheus8 Receives Additional FDA Approval and New Research Documenting Effectiveness

There have been a lot of recent developments in the world of Morpheus8, the industry leading radiofrequency microneedling platform used to tighten and rejuvenate skin.

FDA Expands Morpheus8 Clearance

The first recent news is that Morpheus8 now has the first and only FDA clearance for soft tissue contraction for fractional radiofrequency microneedling. Specifically, the “FDA has cleared the use of the Morpheus8 Applicators for the delivery of fractional radiofrequency use in dermatologic skin procedures where coagulation/ contraction of soft tissue or hemostasis is needed.”

This FDA action expands Morpheus8’s existing FDA clearance, emphasizing the versatility of the technology for physicians and patients including:

  • Automatically deploying bipolar RF to multi-level treatment depths and programmable energy levels.
  • Safely and efficaciously meeting the demand for dermal contraction and subdermal adipose treatments.
  • Delivering both natural and striking results without toxic injections.

Morpheus8’s RF Microneedling is Effective for Enhancing Skin

In the research paper, titled “Correction of age-related changes in the skin at the dermal and subdermal level using radiofrequency macroneedling therapy“, published in April 2024, it was found that Morpheus8 showing significant improvements in skin structure, especially in subjects 40 years and older, through increased collagen and elastin density. The therapy demonstrated effective skin rejuvenation, emphasizing its potential in correcting age-related changes.

Summary of Research Findings

Key Objectives

  1. Evaluate the morphological changes in the skin of subjects before and after undergoing fractionated radiofrequency (RF) microneedling with Morpheus8.
  2. Assess the effectiveness of RF microneedling therapy in reducing age-related changes in the skin.

Methodology

  1. Participants:
    • Subjects were divided into two age groups: 35-40 years (Group 1) and over 40 years (Group 2).
  2. Procedure:
    • Single pass treatment at a depth of 2 mm with 22 mj/pin of energy.
    • Biopsies were taken before and 28 days after the procedure for histological examination.
  3. Parameters Evaluated:
    • Thickness of various skin layers.
    • Number of fibroblasts and inflammatory cells.
    • Surface area of vessels in the dermis.
    • Density and fragmentation of collagen and elastin fibers.
    • A semi-quantitative scoring method was used to analyze histopathological changes.

Key Results

  1. Baseline Observations:
    • Older subjects exhibited decreased epidermal thickness (28.2% less), fewer epidermal cells (38.4% less), fibroblasts (29.5% less), and inflammatory cells (73.7% less) compared to younger subjects.
    • Increased fragmentation of elastin fibers (33.3%) in older subjects.
  2. Post-Procedure Findings:
    • Younger subjects showed an 8.1% increase in epidermal cells, 21.1% increase in fibroblasts, and 25-33.3% increase in the density of collagen and elastin fibers.
    • Older subjects experienced more pronounced improvements, including a twofold increase in elastin fiber density and decreases in elastin fiber fragmentation.
    • Increase in the number of vessels (1.7-1.8 times increase in vessel area).
  3. Histological Analysis:
    • Post-treatment biopsies revealed increases in epidermal cells, fibroblasts, and blood vessels.
    • Enhanced density of collagen and elastin fibers, minimal dystrophic changes, and reduced inflammatory infiltration.
  4. Clinical Implications:
    • RF microneedling demonstrated significant improvements in skin condition for all age groups.
    • In older patients, the treatment was particularly effective due to pronounced stimulation of elastogenesis.

Conclusion

  • Device Efficacy:
    • The Morpheus8 device effectively combines FSN and adipocyte ablation, leading to significant skin tightening and contouring.
    • RF microneedling exhibited substantial subsurface thermal effects, which contributed to soft tissue contraction and collagen remodeling.
  • RF Microneedling Effectiveness: Proven to be a potent method for correcting age-related skin changes, enhancing skin regeneration, and improving overall skin condition in subjects across different age groups.
